First annual SME Banking Awards presented by Efma and Mastercard
Following a year of critical SME banking support, our awards will recognize the top SME Banker and Bank of the Year.
Starting in 2020, Efma and Mastercard joined forces to create an SME banking community. With webinars, podcasts, and articles, we were able to connect and inspire an outstanding community that played an integral role in providing support to SMEs during a difficult year.
Now, after a year of community building, it is time to recognize the very best. Every successful community needs to have a benchmark, which is why we are launching our first annual SME Banking Awards. These specialized awards will highlight the most innovative players in the industry. This initiative will help institutions position themselves as innovation leaders while showcasing their SME strategy and vision.
In the very first edition of the SME Banking Awards we have decided to recognize people/institutions in two categories:
- SME Banker of the Year
- SME Bank of the Year
SME Banker of the Year
7 nominees in this category were selected by Efma and Mastercard, based on their bank's performance in SME Banking (innovations, SME initiatives, business results, visibility, etc.) leaving aside their size, market share, or existence in the market. Each nominee was brought to you in the form of a podcast interview in our “Series with global SME visionary bankers”.
The goal of these 1-to-1 interviews, led by Efma’s SME Banking Program Lead Lukas Dzuroska, was to create a profile of each banker covering their personality, leadership style, SME approach, and key projects.

We will also select a SME Bank of the Year. There were so many top institutions that demonstrated compassion and provided crucial support to SME clients who were hit hard by the pandemic. We interviewed an executive from each nominated bank.
