Efma Accenture’s insurance innovation of the month award for January goes to Zurich American Insurance Company for its Zurich Environmental Emergency Response (ZEER) mobile app.


ZEER is a proactive, customer-centric reporting tool that provides cost-efficient and effective communication during an emergency. The app provides an immediate form of reporting environmental emergencies using geo-location in real time on a 24/7/365 basis.

It can take up to 10 minutes to process reports made online or by phone, but the ZEER mobile app can reduce this to within one minute. It connects customers to a Zurich Emergency Response Coordinator (an employee/claims adjuster for Zurich) within seconds, reducing customers’ exposure. The app’s efficiency in connecting customers with coordinators has helped reduce the cost of the required clean-ups and eliminated fines and penalties for failure to report to environmental regulators throughout North America.

To date, ZEER has a 100% success rate. It is used by underwriting staff as a value-added tool that they can provide to customers at renewal, retention and to attract new business.

Zurich’s risk engineers use the app as a reporting/claims management solution when a need for environmental emergency exposures is noted.

The app is available on iOS, Android and BlackBerry platforms and is provided to Zurich customers free of charge.

The ZEER mobile app will be automatically selected as a nominee for the Efma-Accenture Innovation in Insurance Awards 2018. Deadline for February Innovation of the Month is 5 February.
