Insurance Innovation of the Month: Unigarant's ANWB Safe Driving Data project 19 January 2022 105
Efma-Accenture’s Insurance Innovation of the Month award for January goes to Unigarant for their ANWB Safe Driving Data project.
Governments are always searching for ways to make driving safer. Speed limits, traffic tickets, and improved education are some of the many ways to reduce the dangers of driving. In the Netherlands, the insurance sector is doing its part too. Unigarant – an insurance company of ANWB – created the Safe Driving Data project. It is our winner of the Efma-Accenture Innovation in Insurance of the Month award in January.
Unigarant is committed to improving road safety in the Netherlands. That is why they started this initiative that rewards customers for good driving behavior. Unigarant calculates a driving score based on speed, corner speed, acceleration, and braking, among other metrics. A driving score is calculated for each driver. By linking that score to an account, Unigarant rewards its safest drivers with discounts on their insurance premiums.
Given the data sharing that is necessary for such a project, this represents a unique collaboration between public, commercial, and advocacy parties that will have a major impact on road safety in the Netherlands. Unigarant’s ability to make correct road safety analyses, and subsequently reward customers for driving safely, will contribute to the long-term goal of reducing traffic casualties to zero.
The project was piloted in Rotterdam and is now being rolled out to customers throughout the country. It will be fascinating to watch as the project grows in scope and more data becomes available. Rewarding good behavior is benefiting all parties involved: Unigarant, their customers, and Dutch society at large. Public-private partnerships again demonstrate their value in producing tangible real-world outcomes with this month’s winner.
Unigarant’s innovation will be automatically selected as a nominee for the Efma-Accenture Innovation in Insurance Awards 2022. Submit your innovations on the Efma insurance innovation portal. Participation is free of charge and open to all insurance institutions. 9 February is the last day to submit for the February Innovation of the Month.
