Exploring the potential of mobile applications

Overview
In recent years, there has been a phenomenal increase in the use of mobile phones, with the penetration rate exceeding 90% among young people in developed countries. Developments in the technology also offer huge possibilities that extend far beyond just simple communication. However, much of this potential has not yet been exploited by the financial sector.

Some of the main possibilities involve using mobiles as tools for:

Account management (including consultations, transactions etc.)
Payment (i.e. mobile payment)
Added value (including geolocalisation; acquisition of new clients; as a tool for sales and marketing etc.)

Although some of these areas have been tentatively explored, no real breakthrough products or services have yet been developed - although Mobile 2.0 offers some promise.

Key issues
The conference will also look at issues such as:

The risks and opportunities involved. This includes an exploration of initiatives in other sectors (such as telecoms) - should these be seen as a threat or as a chance for developing new applications?
The need to see mobile as a separate channel that should become an integrated part of a multi-channel strategy.
Forums and initiatives on other continents that are ahead of Europe in terms of mobile phone technology and usage.
